This simply seemed right:
- Dave Dubya celebrates the solemn meaning of Memorial Day, and goes back to the origins of the annual remembrance of sacrifice. He applies those lessons to our current national values.
- At The Moderate Voice, retired U.S. Air Force Major Dorian de Wind reminds us of the names and images of the most recent heroes:
the 13 …who have made the ultimate sacrifice in support of our most recent war in Iran.
Yet, every single soldier, sailor, airman, Marine, and coast guardsman who makes the ultimate sacrifice is equally mourned, equally honored.
Except for those service members – sometimes not as heralded as they should be – who continue to fight and die for our country as part of Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq and Syria, we fortunately had not seen sizeable casualty numbers since 13 U.S. service members were killed in Kabul during the Afghanistan withdrawal nearly five years ago.
Sadly, this Memorial Day, that number, 13, is again in our hearts and thoughts.
For that is the number of brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in support of our most recent war, Operation Epic Fury, against Iran. - M. Bouffant at Web of Evil examines a couple of Trump back‑to‑back statements about the Strait of Hormuz, remembers consistency, and assures us Trump’s little mind is safe from hobgoblins.
At least that one. - News Corpse posts Donald Trump’s absolute assurance that the war with Iran will end in a few days, then lists NINE times beginning in March he has promised the war has ended or is about to end in a few days.
- My long time very conservative friend Darrell Michaels suggests that ending the attack on Iran before rule by the current thugocracy is destroyed would be a betrayal of US security interests and the survival of Israel. His primary point is that Iran cannot be trusted to honor any agreement.
To his minimal credit, he makes a small reference to what should have been his strongest argument: the brutality of Iran’s ruling regime toward the clear majority in Iran who would like to see the thugocracy vanish and blow away:
This war must be finished for the sake of a lasting and true peace, and for the innocent Muslims living under the shadow of such dire oppression. That’s it.
Of course, Darrell engages in the requisite attack on Obama.
The term “taqiyya” is the Islamic tactic of lies, deceit, and full-blown disinformation campaigns, specifically prescribed in the Quran and by generations of Islamic clerics as the preferred means of gaining the upper hand over an enemy, particularly in war. Iran has considered themselves at war with us since the overthrow of the Shah of Iran 47 years ago. They have no scruples in lying to us in negotiations to prolong the ceasefire and procure other strategic advantages. This is what they did with Obama and the JCPOA. They continued to enrich uranium despite vowing not to do so past certain limits. Obama evidently did not care. The distrust of Iran’s ruling Muslims may not apply to all adherents of Islam. My friend points out that some of his best friends…(You know the rest).
The point has been made before that adversarial agreements are never negotiated between countries that trust each other.
We don’t have weapons agreements with Britain or Canada. No need.
Reagan’s Trust but Verify is deliberate irony. The lack of trust is why every meaningful agreement has safeguards.Wikipedia has a pretty good summary of the comprehensive inspection requirement of Iran’s the entire uranium supply chain demanded and gotten by Obama.
Multiple evaluations, including those by US inspection teams certified that Iran was living up to the agreement. They pretty much had to.
That is, until Trump took office. He almost immediately suspended those inspections. A year later, he tore up the entire agreement.
Let’s not pretend that the agreement negotiated by Obama was terminated by Trump because of its flaws, other than the fact of its authorship.
- Juliet Jeske at Decoding Fox News manages to summarize 22 hours of Fox, beginning with smug certainty that Trump will destroy Iran any day now.
But yet another quick TrumpJump pretty much crushed the Fox trot:
Within 24 hours Trump declared another pause in the conflict which forced Fox News to pivot to more mundane topics.
By mid-week the war wasn’t even a major story. The network’s highest rated show The Five didn’t even include a single segment about the war for the entire week.A more basic problem:
Fox News still hasn’t found its footing on how to sell or promote this deeply unpopular conflict in the Middle East.More detailed information is presented by Juliet in a 50‑minute serious, but entertaining, podcast.
- Amidst all his other troubles, Journalist Marcy Wheeler at EmptyWheel reports that Canada is quietly becoming a major thorn for Trump, as our neighbor takes constructive steps with Greenland, NATO, trade, climate, and more.
- Author and educator Amanda Nelson somehow makes us laugh at what Trump is doing to you and me and the country. She partly does it by including how Trump and company insist the living is easy for you and me and the country. She ties in bad news for Trump, so there’s that.
On view a few days ago, she covered Trump’s horrible, terrible week thus far…
…it’s only Tuesday, and we had a holiday!! - In Letters from an American, historian Heather Cox Richardson looks to the coming White House hosted pro‑wrestling presentation as emblematic. Trump sees the world, including politics, as an endless struggle for dominance.
He sees elections, not as an exercise in popular will, but as a form of street fighting. Voter suppression, gerrymandering, and false conspiracy explanations for losses are simply weapons required for winning.
The same analysis is now available in audio format, as Richardson narrates in podcast.
- In Hackwhackers, Trump has his FBI investigate E. Jean Carroll, who won a judgment against him year before last.
Trump denied he had sexually assaulted her back in the 90s, when he absolutely did.
There is some occasional online debate on whether the rape was actually just sexual assault, since the legal threshold differs from common definition you, and I, and everyone uses outside of court.
Hackwhackers has the headline about right: The Rapist Seeks Revenge.
- Despite multiple credible reports about a Trump ordered, revenge motivated, federal investigation into his rape victim from years ago, A U.S. Attorney says it isn’t true.
Julian Sanchez explains how Trump bureaucrats can use federal gobbledygook to make plain fact untrue by pure technical definitional twist:
Given how many credible outlets reported this, my bet is that this is wordplay. There are a couple tiers of “investigation” (in the colloquial sense) federal law enforcement typically conducts before FORMALLY opening a full, predicated “investigation”.
— Julian Sanchez (@normative.bsky.social) May 28, 2026 at 6:39 PM
So it could absolutely be true that they are, in the ordinary-language sense, investigating Carroll with an eye to possible criminal charges without having taken the official bureaucratic step of “opening an investigation.”
— Julian Sanchez (@normative.bsky.social) May 28, 2026 at 6:42 PM
Formally “opening an investigation” involves a bunch of paperwork. So you have to do a fair amount of investigating before you “open an investigation.”
— Julian Sanchez (@normative.bsky.social) May 28, 2026 at 7:02 PM
So they’re just lying
— choo choo choose anger (@ralphtheewiggum.bsky.social) May 28, 2026 at 6:46 PM
The statement could be technically accurate but totally misleading to anyone who doesn’t speak DOJ bureaucratese.

- Ted McLaughlin at jobsanger has numbers as Americans overwhelmingly oppose the Trump Weaponization slush fund to be used to pay the pain and suffering of the mob who stormed the Capitol that Jan 6.
- Wisconsin conservative James Wigderson is appalled, as should we all be repulsed, by the Republican candidate for Governor, as Tom Tiffany considers supporting pallets of cash for January 6 rioters.
James adds the new plans of one of the creators of the plot back then to submit phony elector lists. Jim Troupis thinks he can get multiple millions from the slush fund Trump hopes to force taxpayers to finance.
- In Scotties Playtime, Scottie points to a new trend in criminality: aggressively violent crimes involving fake ICE agents.
Predictable when one sort of agent is not required to unmask or show ID. Any thug can pretend.
- Jason Linkins joins Greg Sargeant, talking about Trump’s zany reaction to the economy, to criticism, and to his own stunning unpopularity.
For those who prefer listening, the podcast is about 15 minutes.
- Like many of us with blood sugar levels that need watching, Jess Piper pays attention to food and beverage intake and their effect. She has discovered that, in her case, stress, or even excess adrenaline, can cause the occasional spike. Good to know.
So it wasn’t hard to figure out one recent blood sugar pole vault:
So, when I sent my husband that Dexcom screenshot, he asked what I had eaten or if I’d snuck a cup of coffee because it was only 10 am. I told him I hadn’t had a morsel of food or a sip of coffee. Instead, I had listened to my State Senator lie and make excuses for an hour at a public hearing in town. That sort of irritation can happen here in Missouri.
My State Senator, Rusty Black, was characteristically smug with the crowd.
He admitted that he wants Missouri to adopt a no-income tax law, which will trigger a regressive sales tax that would harm over 80% of Missourians, including retirees and those working for the lowest wages. It gets worse:
He admitted that he is “unpopular” for defunding schools and, at one point in the meeting, asked the crowd to raise their hand if they “hated Rusty Black.” Several hands went up all over the room while he smiled. And worse still:
He admitted with a smirk that Missouri is ranked 49th in starting teacher pay, and we now rank 48th in the nation for education funding sent by the state to local districts. He shrugged it off as no big deal — he said it had been like that since he was a public school teacher…
And that right there should be the thing that should shock you. My State Senator was a public school teacher for over 30 years, teaching in several rural districts around me. It’s shocking because this same man has sold his soul to the Herzog Foundation. The Herzog Foundation is dedicated to finding ways to get around the Missouri Constitution provision that prohibits diverting dedicated funds away from public schools to instead paying for religious instruction.
Organizations like the Herzog Foundation help normalize a rigged system where public money is funneled into private religious schools and legislators with dark money connections are used to write legislation to defund public schools. One bit of good luck:
- Legal expert Imani Gandy notices what’s happening to abortion rights here in Missouri, mostly because:
It’s real hard to ignore!!A couple years ago, voters here overwhelmingly passed Constitutional Amendment 3:
So, Missouri. Honey. Your voters passed Amendment 3 to protect abortion access in November 2024. They put the right to legal abortion up to the point of fetal viability directly into your state constitution.Ever since, abortion opponents have looked for ways around, over, and through the state Constitution.
One way: Assume the voters must have made a mistake. So let’s make them try again to get it right.
By introducing a ballot initiative that would undo Amendment 3 in the hopes that Missouri voters didn’t actually say what they said when they enshrined legal abortion into the state constitution.Another is a series of bills to outlaw a procedure that never happens, because it’s already against the law, as well as common sense. The objective seems to be meaningless steps that might convince voters that the one huge leap of repeal backward is required.
The premise of every “born alive” bill ever introduced—and there have been dozens of them, Missouri, including yours—is that abortion providers are out here delivering live infants and then killing them. Just wantonly murdering newborns. In clinics. In hospitals.Imani resorts to education:
And so, here in Missouri, the votes and maneuvers and tricks continue.
- It seems Trump phones are, at long last, beginning to deliver to a few of those who long ago paid for them.
tengrain at Mock Paper Scissors looks through their made in America assurances and finds a huge loophole.
- The Biden administration sues TikTok for tricking kids into giving them their private information, without the knowledge of their parents.
It’s two years later, and Trump keeps up the pressure until TikTok finally agrees to a settlement.
$400 million dollars.
Good for Trump! The families deserve every penny, and more. There is one small hitch.
Our favorite Earth-Bound Misfit provides some detail. The settlement won’t go to the families after all.
Trump will take the money and use it to build more vanity monuments to himself.
Headline fits:
Trump Steals Money From Kids - It was supposed to be another nonpartisan, nonpolitical celebration of American Independence. So an all‑star series of stars and starry groups announced their participation.
Tommy Christopher imports Jake Tapper, who narrates, using clips, and applying many of the lyrics of the groups who, having found out the organizing Trumpers had lied to them, are, faster than a speeding bullet, dropping out.
Entertaining and dryly humorous:

- Dave Columbo looks back and remembers the days of Trump:
- The Borowitz Report covers Trump’s emergency run to the hospital…
…to have Lindsey Graham surgically removed.
- CalicoJack in The Psy of Life has an idea of why Trump still has some support.
As it turns out, there is evidence that we create our social relationships based on the identity characteristics of others.
As I read his analysis, we tend to trust everyday people, which is to say people like ourselves.
Since we can’t research everything (who has the time or interest?), we trust politicians who seem to be everyday people. Like us.
Becoming, as we do, skeptical, we trust commentators who seem to be everyday people. Like us.
Everyday people being those who share our views, age, orientation, ethnicity, and especially, for many, skin color.
So who you gonna believe?
Some television expert with charts, or a scientist with his head in the clouds, or a fake news report?
Or someone on the tube who is just like the guy next door we wave to as we mow our lawn? - At The Onion, Trump boasts that his annual physical shows no signs of pedophilia.
How about that?!!
- North Carolina pastor John Pavlovitz is not afraid of Artificial Intelligence. He is morally opposed:
I don’t resist progress, but I do resist technological movements that pillage our natural resources, devalue human beings, harvest their creativity without compensating them, and enable talentless parasites to profit from the work of billions of flesh-and-blood people, who since the dawn of time have spent themselves on behalf of their art.
He suggests ways to push back on misusing what should be a tool, not an exploitive crutch:
Use your brain instead of your thumbs. A few quick prompts will give you immediate ideas which can be seductive, but it’s fool’s gold. Part of the creative process is to sit with the empty page, the frustrating silence, and the blinking cursor; the invaluable times when the wrestling and the waiting force you to go deeper than an Internet search. - In Canadian satire, The Beaverton brings more commencement address excitement as an AI tech wonders…

- PZ Myers has seen joyful electoral anticipation, many instances of it, in years past and watched it smashed into disappointment. He chooses to be non-optimistic about this November.
I could be totally wrong, and I hope I am, but I expect the Republican party of Evil will cling to their death grip on American politics for a few more years, simply because the electorate have convinced me that they’re morons.
I suppose there is a bit of Mencken in everyone.
- driftglass sees the liberal blogosphere as a combination of frustration and hope. He’s largely right.
He remembers what he calls the Before Time as a period in which the manifest failures and misdeeds of the Bush administration offered opportunities for reform. And he remembers, with some bitterness, a major reason that optimism went unrealized:
And the Mopes in the Middle vastly preferred lolling in a tepid pool of Both Sides Do It goo to a cold shower of facts. Then as now, they don’t know. They don’t wanna know. And they get very angry if you try to make them know. They are with us still:
Because once they are roused to action, the Mopes in the Middle are none too picky about who they blame for what has happened to them: they’re as likely to hold trans people, Mexicans and Democrats responsible for their reduced circumstances as they are fascists, Republican looters and degenerates, and evil billionaires.
And any grifter running against “the system” or “the duopoly” or “politicians in Washington” will always have the inside track with these idiots. But then:
- Brian Beutler makes a common sense argument for a long time goal, abolishing the filibuster. Let majorities rule.
He believed that 15 years ago, when Democrats were surrendering on filibuster reform. And he believes that now.
But with a corrupted judiciary whose primary guiding principle is no longer the law, that necessary reform is not close to enough.
- Right Wing Watch brings us the Lt. Governor of Indiana, Micah Beckwith, explaining his goal to give Indiana residents permission to hate Islam.
And I know that sounds a little harsh at first, but we’ve seen this movement to eradicate hate in our culture. That is the worst thing we could do.
He does clarify that he does not hate Muslims because, once they convert, they make great Christians.
But, we need to be okay with hating again.
- In The Life and Times of Bruce Gerencser, Bruce explores the charge occasionally heard from my coreligionists, that atheists are intellectually dishonest. Thanks as always for including me. I’ve always wanted to write more about science.
I think that the one thing American voters ever did that conservatives will NEVER forgive them for, was having the sheer gall to elect Black man as President, thus ruining their perfect record of 43-0 electing White Men.
They hated us for that more than they hated us for electing the Great Class Traitor FDR, whose record they plotted for 50 years to begin erasing with the election of Reagan, the first Republican Party president elected by the reconstituted Jim Crow Democrats-turned-Republicans as the majority of the party.
Thus the Confederacy rose again and has culminated in the degenerate, corrupt, ‘Project 1826’ shambolic second Trump Administration.
Like the First Confederacy, it is full of preening wealthy oligarchs, vile racists, woefully incompetent me to blinded by their own lies and ambition to even know how incompetent they actually are; spinning great lies and casually destroying everything that made this country actually great in their hubris.
The same thing that doomed the original Confederacy will doom this one; but the costs will be exponentially greater.
The New Arlington’s may be built on the seized Golf Courses of the Traitor Donald Trump…IF we still exist as a country in the end.
And your ‘conservative’ friends own this.
Thank you for all this, and thank you for linking Scottie’s, Burr!
RWW:
“Let’s all hate jihadists”, quoth the “Christanista” jihadist.
(quoth the raven “is too a wurd.”)
Thanks for linking to me & Radar. BTW, I totally agree with bruce.desertrat’s comment above. I remember when Obama was president ~ where I live, he was hated for no other reason than because he was black. & I live in so-called “liberal” NY state.
With all due respect to Mr. Bruce Desertrat, I am not sure which “conservatives” he has been speaking with, or if he has just made broad sweeping assumptions based on the biased media he has ingested.
With very few exceptions, the conservatives I know don’t take into account a person’s color when voting. Indeed, I have found that they vote based on the content of the person’s character rather than the color of their skin.
I personally voted for Alan Keyes in 1996 and 2000 in the primary elections for president. (Long before I became aware of the community organizer Obama.) I also voted for and proudly supported my excellent Congressman Burgess Owens because these folks were the best people for the jobs, in my opinion.
Indeed, it is the Congressional Black Caucus that refuses to admit my congressman and three other black Republicans into their caucus. Evidently it should be renamed the Leftist Congressional Black Caucus. One wonders if they think that if you aren’t a leftist, then you aren’t really black.
Despite my disagreement with Barrack Obama on nearly every issue, I was still heartened that a majority of Americans cast their votes for a black man for president to help erase some of that stain on American history. It occurred to me shortly thereafter that if Obama had been white, he likely would have not won the nomination, let alone the presidency. The first corrupt-woman candidate Hillary would have been president. Obama’s resume would suggest that he was not equipped to govern the nation as president, which he quickly proved to be correct. Ironically, he also seemed to intentionally inflame race relations in the process.
Further, it is the leftists that are acting as members of the neo-confederacy today in many practical aspects. Any federal law which automatically trumps state law, the left reflexively negates and attempts to nullify, just like the confederate south. They don’t like that illegal alien criminals are being deported, so they refuse to hold them on detainers from jail for the feds to arrive and take custody thereof. They would rather release these criminals that were already arrested for other offenses to be let out before ICE arrives to wreak havoc on innocent civilians. After all, having a few more dangerous criminals on the street is worth it if it upsets the Orange Man.
And don’t even get me started on oligarchs supporting leftist Marxism with the Green New Deal, DEI, critical race theory, mutilation of children in the name of transgenderism, and so forth. From Hollywood millionaires to big tech billionaires to the EVIL Soros regime, the left is at least as guilty of this accusation, if not more so.
You want to talk about racism and hatred, well I find that a majority of the hate stems from the “mostly-peaceful protestors” of the left. Hatred of any orthodox Christian faith, especially those that respect biblical truths on the sanctity of life and marriage, and certainly of Judaism has no place in America according to these folks. Anti-Semitism is at levels unseen since the late 1930’s, with a preponderance of it emanating from the left.
As for the ignorant thinking that I am anti-Muslim, I am not. I think Islam, like every one of the world’s great faiths should be protected as per our constitution for its adherents. What I do NOT support is Sharia law being established in this country to trump our constitution. What I do NOT support is the Islamic jihadis governing Iran that have been at war with us for nearly fifty years. It is only now when they became dangerously close to having a nuclear weapon and making “Death to America” and “Death to Israel” a reality, that a president finally stepped up and said enough. Trump is an ass, but he is right on this. The only place he is at fault here is in believing that we can negotiate a deal with the IRGC and the mullahs that they will honor. The war needs to be finished accordingly.
You know, I find it interesting the lack of self-awareness of the left. I despise Trump and have called him out on many of his shortcomings. I only wish that the left would find the intellectual honesty to do the same. The Biden-puppet presidency would be a great place to start.
Obviously Darrell sees the world through MAGA glasses. He pretends to despise the very criminal, fraudster, and exceedingly corrupt sex offender he helped put in office, because of a MAGA fabricated “Biden Crime family”. That’s a pretty big beam of projection in the eyes of authoritarian Christian Nationalists.
Would Darrel admit the Reagan Administration helped Saddam KILL almost a MILLION IRANIANS? And how many Americans did Iran kill outside the war in Iraq that BUSH/Cheney LIED us into? (Saddam was NOT allied with al-Qaeda, did NOT have “nukular aluminum tubes, etc.)
“Fake news”, I’m sure. But just saying “Death to America” for that slaughter makes them the greater threat. It’s a damn slogan, not a declaration of war!!
Dear Leader told all of us “chirping” guys to “just sit back and relax”. Our completely trustworthy and supremely competent Leader has it all under control. (And he’d never lie to us, right?)
“Iran really wants to make a deal, and it will be a good one for the U.S.A. and those that are with us. But don’t the Dumocrats, and various seemingly unpatriotic Republicans, understand that it is MUCH tougher for me to properly do my job and negotiate, when political hacks keep negatively “chirping,” at levels never seen before, over and over again, that I should move faster, or move slower, or go to war, or not go to war, or whatever. Just sit back and relax, it will all work out well in the end – It always does! President DJT”
Never mind the Iranians want an agreement that includes Israel ending their mass murder of Lebanese. Over 3,000, including children, slaughtered so far, including those at funerals, hospitals, and emergency workers “double tapped” while rendering aid to previous victims.
As with Trump’s crimes, Darrell’s “news” sources NEVER mention Israeli war crimes. NEVER.
Also, not up for consideration in MAGA World:
Unless it’s unfounded accusations against Biden and Democrats, “see no evil” is the willful delusional defense mechanism of the authoritarian personality. This is what happens when only pro-Trump propaganda is accepted as legitimate journalism.
And speaking of evil regimes:
What kind of leader wants to pardon and PAY thugs for beating cops bloody to overturn a fair election?
What kind of leader orders the arrest and punishment of critics and people who lawfully held him accountable?
And speaking of corrupt regimes:
Trump bought Dell stock, told the Americans to buy Dell computers. The Defensive Department just awarded Dell with a 9 billion dollars contract! The stock is up 39 % after hours.
Our friend Darrell doesn’t seem to object when the Criminal President Trump and his henchmen ignore and violate the law, Congressional subpoenas, court rulings, and judicial orders, does he?
“Law and order for thee, but not for me”.
He seems to believe Trump never committed any crimes and is eager to condemn anyone for holding him accountable, or even MENTIONING his crimes.
And why does Darrel celebrate the harsh punishment, cruelty, and neglect suffered by non-violent immigrants of color in privatized corporate concentration camps? Blissful ignorance?
Maybe he’d like to see them treated like Palestinian prisoners tortured and raped, even by dogs.
One account:
Palestinian ex-prisoner recounts rape by police dog in Israeli jail
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMClnrt6p1U
British Medical Journal:
https://www.bmj.com/content/392/bmj.s171
Palestinians have described being raped, beaten, and attacked by dogs at the hands of prison staff in a graphic new report by Israeli human rights organisation B’Tselem.1
The Israel Prison Service (IPS) has been described as a “network of torture camps,” in which more than 10 000 Palestinians, including 350 children, were being held as of the end of September 2025.
At least 84 identified Palestinian detainees and prisoners, including one child, died in Israeli facilities between October 2023 and January 2026, B’Tselem found.
“Israel has released only four bodies and continues to hold the remaining 80,” the report said. “As part of its efforts to conceal crimes committed in detention facilities.”
Is this really justice? Or authoritarian brutality? Either way, his “news” sources care about that as much as he does. Nothing to see there, I’m sure.
For Trump and Netanyahu are men of mercy and compassion…(for their fellow war criminals and thugs).
If only Darrell could acknowledge Trump’s crimes and question his lies and his propagandists, he just might see the enormous beam in his eye.
We welcome you to reality, Darrell. It’s the original “woke” thing to do.
Unlike Darrell, I like to show some evidence to support my points and opinions.
Senator Chris Murphy:
The heart of our constitutional crisis in one exchange between me and Sec. Mullin. When asked a simple question – if he will obey court orders – he says he will not because some court orders are “politicized”.
That’s not how democracy works. And that’s why we are in a crisis.
Are we great yet, Darrell?
The Pentagon has hired a convicted January 6 rioter to a counterterrorism role in its special operations and low-intensity conflict office, which manages highly classified military operations. Twenty-four-year-old Elias Irizarry has no background or career experience in counterterrorism.
And now Trump’s sycophantic loyalist Bill Pulti will be acting head of the Department of National intelligence…as his SECOND job! ZERO experience in the field, but a cheerleader for Trump’s retribution lawfare.
Pulte’s foundation donated $65,000 to a purported charity called “One World Love,” which investigators and lawmakers have linked to the Binnall Law Group. This law firm represented Donald Trump in his efforts to overturn election results and to avoid paying damages following the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack.
Only the “best”, right, Darrell? Feel the PRIDE of sound leadership.
That’s all for this round. Too bad I’m banned at Darrell’s blog, where he could prove how mistaken and duped this “communist” really is.
